What Is Electrophysiology?

Last updated 3 years ago

To move blood throughout the body, the heart must contract on a regular basis. This repetitive motion is controlled by electrical signals that prompt each contraction. Central to cardiac health is consistent pulsation. In some people, though, the heart may beat in an abnormal manner. Certain conditions may cause the heart to beat too fast or too slowly. Other cardiac issues may lead to fluctuating pulses. To determine the reason for this irregular activity, a cardiac center may rely on electrophysiology. Electrophysiology monitors the pulsing action of the heart to isolate and identity the reason for its abnormal electrical signals. With this diagnostic tool, doctors can diagnose patients with any number of arrhythmia conditions, including atrial fibrillation and sinus tachycardia.
